Most cars accumulate history. This one has never let go of it. This 1972 Citroën SM is reported to be the first example sold in the United States, and its ownership chain has never left a small circle of people who understood exactly what they had. Finished in Vert des Tropiques over a black leather interior, the car is equipped with a five-speed manual transmission and the 2.7-liter Maserati V6. The odometer shows 25k original miles.

Provenance & Ownership

The car was first owned by Bob Gurr, a longtime Walt Disney Imagineer credited with designing more than 100 attractions and ride vehicles for Disneyland, including Autopia and the Matterhorn bobsleds. Gurr later sold the car to Jerry Hathaway, who began his automotive career as a technician at a Los Angeles Buick dealership before becoming captivated by the Citroën SM and founding SM World, which became a factory-certified center for SM service and restoration in the United States. Hathaway was widely regarded as one of the foremost authorities on the SM until his passing in 2021. The car has since passed to its current owner, automotive designer Stewart Reed.

According to the seller, Hathaway declined a later request to fit the car with one of his own aftermarket exhaust systems, citing the car's status as the most original, unrestored SM known to exist.

Exterior

The car is finished in Vert des Tropiques. The paint shows some cracking and chipping consistent with its age and originality, though the body remains straight and the paint presents well overall.

Interior

The cabin is trimmed in black leather and presents in good shape overall, with no tears noted in the leather and no cracks in the dash.

Engine & Drivetrain

Power comes from the 2.7-liter Maserati V6 paired with a five-speed manual transmission. The seller reports that the engine starts every time and runs well, and that the hydropneumatic suspension functions as it should. A hole is present in the exhaust system; per the seller, the car's originality was the reason a replacement exhaust was never fitted.

Awards & Documentation

The car has received awards at various events. The sale includes a collection of memorabilia documenting its history, including magazines, a trophy, ribbons, and handwritten invoices for work performed by both Bob Gurr and Jerry Hathaway.

Condition

The car presents very well overall, with no issues noted with the tires, brakes, glass, or light lenses.
